Elizabeth “Liz” (Shewmake) Knoedler of Duluth, Georgia passed away peacefully on October 18, 2019 surrounded by her beloved children and grandchildren. Liz was born on June 1, 1935 to Herman and Elizabeth (Brown) Shewmake in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She attended Girls Preparatory School and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before marrying Carl E. Knoedler. Their four children were born and raised in Chattanooga and Doraville, Georgia where they settled. Following their divorce, Liz moved to Connecticut, then to Maryland, and back to Tennessee before finally resettling in Georgia.
Her travels dispersed her children up and down the east coast, but her loving family values were strongly instilled in her children who have remained close even though physically scattered. Each year, the family continues the tradition of vacationing on the NC beaches, as well as gathering for the winter holidays, both of which were events Liz loved.
She leaves her children: Margaret Durbas (David) of West Hartford, CT, Chris Knoedler (Marleny) of Brookeville, MD, Rick Knoedler (Tina) of Norcross, GA, and Mark Knoedler of Chattanooga, TN. “Mimi” also leaves six grandchildren: Christopher, Zachary, Brian, Everett, Adam and Katie.
Through the years, Liz was employed by the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in GA, Bank Building Corp. in CT and DeKalb Medical Center in GA. She was well liked at work mostly because of her infectious sense of humor and practical jokes, which resulted in several lifelong friendships.
She had a special love and affection for animals, and leaves her cat, Franko, and her dog, Garbo, both of whom were an exceptionally special part of her life. She will always be remembered for her feisty spirit and her extraordinary cooking skills and passion for food, which she made and shared lovingly with her family.
A private memorial service will be held for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to www.humanesociety.org (Humane Society of the United States) or to www.sacklerpain.org (which promotes the fight against pharmaceuticals and advocates for the destigmatization of substance abuse disorder).
