

George Arthur Snelling died on October 23, 2018 following a stroke. He was 89 years old and had been an Atlanta resident since 1985. He is survived by Carolyn Shiver Snelling, his wife of 56 years and two sons, George Arthur (Cherry) and John Shiver (Bridget), and six grandchildren: John Shiver Jr. (Jack), Molly Frances, Sara Barrett (Sally), Edward Hall, Col Wyatt, and August William (Gus). He was born in St. Petersburg, FL, the fourth of William Henry and Eula Hall Snelling's five sons. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1948 and the University of Florida in 1951, with a major in Economics. He then joined the US Air Force where he served four years during the Korean War. After his discharge he became a Florida CPA and a Partner in the accounting firm of Smoak, Davis & Nixon. In 1967 he became an auditor with Barnett Banks of Florida and later EVP and CFO. He also served as CFO of Sun Banks and following deregulation of the banking industry, he was instrumental in structuring the first interstate bank merger between Sun Banks of Florida and Trust Company of Georgia. When SunTrust Banks was formed, he was transferred to Atlanta as the holding company's Senior EVP and was responsible for mergers, acquisitions, the mortgage company and bank operations until he retired in 1991. He was a member of Dunwoody United Methodist Church and a Trustee emeritus of Florida Southern College. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of DUMC at 11:00 am, Monday, October 29, with a reception following in the social hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DUMC, 1548 Mt.
