Lewie joined Rosie, the love of his life, in heaven on May 22, 2026. A resident of Sterling Estates-East Cobb in Marietta, GA, Lewie was born in Atlanta, GA, on May 6, 1924, to Dorothy Walker Brannon and L. A. Brannon, Sr. Lewie and his sister, Dorothy, were raised by their mother and maternal grandparents, Leona and E. E. Limbaugh in Buckhead. There he graduated from North Fulton High School in 1941 and attended Georgia Tech until the Spring of 1943, when he was called to active duty from the U. S. Army Reserve. After Basic Training he was sent to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as part of the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) where soldiers were placed on college campuses for accelerated learning and military training. There he met his future wife, Rose Maureen Phillips, and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As World War II entered its final year, Lewie was sent to Europe with an artillery battalion where he served until Victory in Europe Day, May 8, 1945. Among the last soldiers sent to Europe and the first returned to the U.S., he was then assigned to amphibious training in California for Pacific duty in the continuing war with Japan.
Lewie and Rosie were married on his furlough on July 22, 1945, and lived in San Luis Obispo until he was discharged several months after the end of the war that September.
In February of 1946, Lewie was employed by S & H Xray Company in Atlanta. Using his Mechanical Engineering degree, he worked his way up through the company from sales and service, to joint ownership, and then to president of the company in 1975 after the company was sold to North American Philips. In addition, he was named a vice-president of Philips Medical Service Corporation in 1977.
In 1987, after seeing the company grow from 13 to 400 employees and $1.3 million to $110 million in sales, Lewie turned over management duties with the company to spearhead strategic initiatives for Philips as vice-president of Philips Medical Systems Special Projects. He retired from Philips in 1989 after completing 43 years in the Medical Imaging Industry.
Lewie is survived by his three children, Mark Brannon (Beth) of Bryson City, NC, Teresa Brannon Inman (John) of Bloomfield, IN, and Gail Brannon of Powder Springs, GA, six grandchildren, Melanie Brannon Derringer (Derrick), Brian Miles (Stephanie), Jeffrey Brannon, Shannon Inman Ruanto (Alan), Laura Inman Sumpter (Walter), Jane Inman Stormer (Kevin), and seven great grandchildren Drew Derringer, Bradley Derringer, Campbell Miles, Jackson Miles, Aria Ruanto, Wrenne Sumpter and Jacob Sumpter.
Lewie was predeceased by his wife of 77 years, Rose Maureen Brannon and recently by his sister, Dorothy Brannon Phillips of Vero Beach, FL. During his long life he outlived his family elders and most of his friends; however, four years ago upon transitioning to life at Sterling Estates-East Cobb, he gathered an entire field of new friends who along with his family made his life complete.
Growing up in Atlanta in the 1930s, Lewie joined the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout, then earned Bronze, Silver and Gold Palms. He was greatly influenced by his scoutmaster, Jimmy Collins, later becoming a scoutmaster himself. Most family vacations also involved camping and hiking; however in later years, he and Rosie enjoyed travelling the world, especially in Ireland and other European countries.
A lifetime member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Lewie served over the years as a Deacon, Elder, youth leader, and was a Sunday School teacher of renown. He was a member there for ninety-six years.
After retirement, Lewie enjoyed tennis and swimming laps, continuing to work with Conor Acheson in the Wellness Center at Sterling Estates as his health allowed, which may have contributed to his long and productive life of 102 years.
Lewie and Rosie were generous supporters of many charitable organizations over the years; however, the Salvation Army of Atlanta was especially close to their hearts and a memorial to that organization would make them both smile. Following Lewie’s wishes, a small, family memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the professional and caring staff at Sterling Estates-East Cobb and to Lew’s many phenomenal friends there.
