Ms. Velma Howell, the esteemed matriarch of the Burke-Howell family, passed away peacefully 28 days before her 85th birthday, March 30, 1939. A devout Christian driven by her unwavering faith, she dedicated her life to spreading the message of Jesus Christ. Ms. Howell was not just a prayer warrior but a beacon of strength and resilience, touching the lives of many through her fervent prayers and deep knowledge of the Word of God.
Her commitment to serving others knew no bounds. Ms. Howell's visit to Honduras, where she brought hope and the love of Christ to poverty-stricken communities, exemplified her compassionate spirit and selfless nature. Whether near or far, if you had a problem, Mother had a prayer fortified with passages from the Word of God.
Born as the oldest daughter to Mr. Alfred and Mrs. Jessie Burke, she was among the second child of eight children: Alfred Jr., Gail Jonekins, Calvin Burke, Andrew Burke, Carol Bundrage, Joyce Johnson, and Gregory Burke. She was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School.
Ms. Howell was the nurturing mother of four boys and three girls, affectionately known as the magnificent seven. She is preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Gaytra Howell, and her second son, Edward Howell. She is survived by children: Derek Howell, Deidra Winston, Xavier Howell, Sherri Brown (Kelvin), and Diantre Howell (Tara).
Ms. Howell leaves a legacy of love and faith, cherished by her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her dedication to Christian studies earned her certificates, and she generously shared her wisdom as a Sunday School teacher.
