After vacationing on the beaches of Horry County, he decided that Little River is where he wanted to retire and spend his remaining years. Although he relocated to Little River, he was fortunate that he was able to work from home the last years of his employment until his retirement from Rehabco, in 2015. Previously, he was a bank branch president in Astoria, N.Y., for 25 years.
Chuck was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in Vietnam with a helicopter rescue unit. He sometimes recalled the animosity he and other Vietnam era servicemen received at home, and how he changed from uniform to civilian clothes before leaving the airport.
From his boyhood on Long Island, N.Y., Chuck was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He had several boats over the years. After moving to Little River, he soon bought a boat and often fished in the Intracoastal Waterway and offshore. He was also a handyman who enjoyed tinkering with various projects.
His only son, Justin C. Avery, survives Chuck. Also surviving is his former spouse and best friend, Mariateresa Avery. A sister preceded him in death.
The family will celebrate his life greeting friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at Lee Funeral Home and Crematory.
The Veterans Welcome Home and Resource Center, Little River, has been designated as a memorial.
