Dennis Herbert Houghtaling

Dennis Herbert Houghtaling, age 87, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina passed away on May 12, 2023, after a long struggle with progressively serious medical conditions. Dennis was born on September 26, 1935 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Dennis graduated from The College of Pharmacy - Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan, in 1957. While managing a Muir Drug Store in Jackson, Michigan, he met and married Janet Mandrick (nee Reynolds) in April 1963.

The family moved to Waynesville, North Carolina, a couple years later where Dennis continued his community pharmacy practice. Changing to a hospital pharmacy, he assumed the responsibilities of Pharmacy Director at Haywood County Hospital in 1969. He continued in this position until 1985, when he and Janet moved to Falfurrias, Texas. Subsequently moving to Pecos, Texas, Dennis resumed community pharmacy practice as a Pharmacy Manager with Walmart in Pecos and later in Coldwater, Michigan. After nine years as a Pharmacy Manager for Walmart the Houghtaling's relocated to Midland, Texas.

Entering into semi-retirement, Dennis practiced hospital pharmacy part-time at the Texas Oncology Pharmacy in Midland for over eight years. After losing his wife, Janet, Dennis fully retired and moved to Asheville, NC. Following a serious illness, Dennis relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in 2018 to be closer to family.

Dennis was an active member of Christ Church in Midland, Texas, and later All Saints Church, Mills River, North Carolina. Both are part of the worldwide Anglican communion.

Dennis is survived by sons Dwane (Jeannette) of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Lewis (Charlotte) of Little River, South Carolina. He also leaves behind grandchildren Shawn (Tammy) Houghtaling, Erika Houghtaling, Alex (Taylor) Houghtaling; step-grandchildren Larry Witt II, Charlisa (Ryan) Dowling, and Amberly (Danny) Thompson; and great grandson Kevin Houghtaling. Dennis is also survived by his brother Edward (Constance) of Lansing, Michigan; nephews; nieces; and many cousins are also part of his extended family.

Dennis is preceded in death by his wife, Janet, and his parents Gerald and Josephine (nee Abfalter) Houghtaling of Three Rivers, Michigan. Dennis received last rites on April 20, 2023, from Father Emerson of St. Andrews in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. A Requiem Mass and burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 31, 2023 at All Saints Anglican Church located at 15 McDowell Road, Mills River, NC, 28759. Father Erich Zwingert will preside.
