Gary Jo Shuster passed away at home on June 13, 2018 after a brief illness. He was surrounded his loving family. He was known as Jo to all of his many friends. Jo was born in New Eagle, PA, on July 17, 1939.
Jo spent the years of 1959-1961 serving our country in the US Army. He was very proud of his service and our great country. After an honorable discharge he began his life in construction. He met his wife Nancy in Binghamton, NY and they married on August 31, 1963 in Massena, NY. He built many roads, bridges, buildings including many in the Grand Strand Area. He moved to Calabash with his family in 1985 and was a construction superintendent for Associated Builders, Chancel Construction and Hayes Construction. Jo loved to have his hands in building, and worked up until his retirement two and a half years ago.
Jo was also very active with his family, acting as Cub Master of his sons’ (Todd and Stephen) Cub pack, Little League baseball coach and Midget League basketball coach. He spent many hours supporting his daughter Lynn in her years in gymnastics in Geneva, Ohio. Dad always put his family first and even in difficult times he would remind us that somewhere out there were others that were having a tougher time.
He loved to play a round of golf with his buddies, Mark Katuscak and Lou Barnabas, and enjoyed many Sundays golfing with them and then having a cold beverage afterward at Oscars or Mulligans. A special thank you to Ken Duker, Joe Kaufman and Kevin for all the friendship and help over the years. He would like to send special thoughts and thanks to his many friends and family in Ohio and New York that he knew for so many years.
Jo was preceeded in death by his mother (Jeanne), father (Albert) and brother (Eric).
He is survived by his wife Nancy (Clough) of 54 years, his sons Todd (Longs), Stephen (Ft. Lauderdale), daughter Lynn (North Charleston) and her husband Tony Strain.
In lieu of flowers, Jo has asked for memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society or The Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care.
A ceremony will be held at Lee Funeral Home (11840 SC-90, Little River, SC 29566) on Sunday, June 17 at 2 pm. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. The family would like to invite friends and family to Oscars afterward at 4 pm to celebrate his life and share stories and laughter about a life well lived.
