Born in Mebane, NC on April 27, 1937, he was the son of the late Larry Gordon and Frances Sink Powell. He was proud of being adopted from the Children’s Home Society and served on their Board and founded their Alumni Association.
He spent his early childhood in Norfolk, VA and Charlotte, NC graduating from Old Central High School where he excelled in basketball and tennis. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before entering the US Army where he served in the military police. He furthered his education at The Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science and started his sales career designing patient billing systems for doctors. After a short stint with the National Junior Football Federation (NJFF) promoting youth football, he joined LP Muller Yarn Brokers of Philadelphia in 1972. After 12 years, he returned south as Vice President of Sales for R. L Stowe Mills, Belmont, NC until his retirement in 2000.
Larry was a man of faith and active in the church community wherever he lived. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach. His faith and his family were always a support to him especially his wife of 62 years, Harriette, the love of his life.
Larry had an infectious smile, a keen sense of humor and never met a stranger. If you gave him an audience, he always had a good story to share. After spending years sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and restoring an old mustang convertible, he retired to Myrtle Beach so he could pursue his love of golf.
He was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club and Cramer Mountain Country Club. He was an original member of the Tidewater Travelers, a weekly traveling golf group. He loved being a starter at Long Bay Golf Club and The Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Susan Powell Andrews (Jim) of Nashville, TN, Larry G. “Biff” Powell III (Catherine) of Charlotte, NC and four grandchildren Morgan Elizabeth Petersen (Dan), Caroline Frances Andrews, Holland Gibbs Andrews, and Harrison Bennett Powell.
