Nancy L. Green

Born in Lewisburg, WV, she was a daughter of the late Silas A. Rutherford and Stella M. Wanless Rutherford Hunter.

Preceding Nancy in death in addition to her parents are her brothers, Gene Rutherford, Robert Rutherford, William Rutherford, Patrick Rutherford; infant sister, Doris Rutherford; stepfather, John V. Hunter; and great-granddaughter, Zaela Snedegar.

Nancy was a graduate of Lewisburg HS, class of 1963, and attended Prince George’s Community College. After graduating high school she moved to Washington, DC to live with her brother. She began a career with Thompson’s Dairy in Washington DC from 1963 until 1971, when she joined Holy Cross Hospital of Silver Spring MD until her retirement in 2002.

In 1965, Nancy married Gervasio (Jim) Pontorno at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Their children were Lisa and Melissa. In 1970, Nancy married William Green in the United Methodist Church of the Redeemer. They had one child, Julie. They were married until 1995.

After meeting and falling in love with Thomas Wheeler, the two became active at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Bowie, MD, where the they were married in 2003 following a lengthy engagement which began in 1996.

Nancy loved her family and enjoyed any family function whether it was a holiday or a birthday, she made them special. Always in the stands at school for sporting events, Nancy was the greatest cheerleader for her children and grandchildren. She was most proud of them celebrating any school awards or ceremonies honoring achievements.

She had a green thumb and was a master gardener. Nancy was an avid reader (loved Danielle Steele Books) and was a lover of all animals, her pets as well as strays. She took pleasure in feeding deer, squirrels, birds, and racoons, any animal in need.

Until she moved to the Maryland Eastern Shore in 2018, she was active in St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Bowie, MD where she also participated in food and clothing drives.

In addition to her husband, Nancy is survived by her daughters, Lisa Pontorno (Dennis Woodzell), Melissa Beaver (Michael Beaver), Julie Delp (Michael Delp) and grandchildren, Jeffery Snedegar, Steven Snedegar, Christopher Snedegar, Alexis Beaver, Courtney Beaver, Gage Bowen, Parker Delp, Reese Delp, and Van Delp.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday March 8th at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 14900 Annapolis Road, Bowie MD 20715. A special short spiritual service will take place around 3:00 p.m. conducted by a dear friend.
