Russ was born San Francisco on June 25, 1944 to the late Mildred and Russell Bliss. Russ is survived by his wife of 38 years, Helena; stepdaughter, Melissa Roddie and her husband Scott and three grandsons; his sister, Carin Kujawski and her husband Jim; brothers, Jerry Bliss and his wife Chris, Jim Bliss and his wife Penny. Russ also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews who knew him as Uncle Rusty.
Russ served as a reservist in the National Guard. He then went on to pursue higher education at the University of Rochester where he completed a Bachelor's degree.
Russ had a fulfilling career working for New York state in both the department of taxation and finance and the department of health where he and Helena met. Russ was a man who liked to get things done and expected hard work from whomever he was working with. Russ would be the first person to lend his helping hands on a project and he was always generous with his time and effort.
Russ was a kind, vibrant and gregarious man who loved to share his knowledge with family and friends. As an aficionado of fishing, the New York Yankees and the Russian language, he could always be found looking up new information and “challenging” whomever was in his company about what he had learned. He imparted this love for knowledge in his grandsons and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He loved watching Jeopardy and probably should have been on the show!
Russ loved a crackling fire, a dry martini and especially loved the water. Whether it was entertaining family and friends at his cottage on Lake Ontario, fishing with his buddies or enjoying the ocean in both Maine and North Myrtle Beach, looking out on the open sea was what brought him great joy.
