A noted educator and tennis coach for nearly fifty years, Steve was born in Sanford, North Carolina, to William (Bill) and Iris McFayden Spivey. The oldest of three spirited boys, he played baseball in high school before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he majored in education. After graduating, he taught at a number of public schools in North Carolina, including West Cary, Broughton, and Enloe, and Myrtle Beach High in South Carolina. As the girls' and boys' tennis coach at Broughton and Enloe, he won more than 20 tennis state championships and over 1,100 matches throughout his career, becoming the only coach in the state to achieve that feat. He was selected for the Professional Tennis Registry's National Coach of the Year in 2019 and was recently elected to the North Carolina High School Athletics Hall of Fame, among other honors throughout his illustrious coaching career.
His players and students remembered Coach Spivey as a mentor and father figure who made an indelible mark on their lives. He was also a respected referee of collegiate tennis matches. Outside of the classroom and the tennis courts, Steve loved to golf, listen to beach music, travel, Carolina Shag, watch UNC Carolina games, and play ball with his grandsons. He was predeceased by his parents, William (Bill) Monroe and Iris McFadyen Spivey. He is survived by his wife, Susan Fricks Spivey; two daughters, Jillian Spivey Caddell and Meredith Spivey; their husbands, Joseph Caddell and Oscar Silva; three grandsons, Jack and Theodore (Teddy) Caddell and Mateo Silva Spivey; two brothers, Mike Spivey and Greg Spivey. He is also survived by his step daughter, Stephanie Graham (Scott) and step grandsons, Evan and Hayden Graham.
Celebration of life services will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, and North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, at a later date.
Lee Funeral Home and Crematory of Little River is serving the family.
