Walter Francis Pitt, 78, of Longs, South Carolina, died October 5, 2023 surrounded by family. Walter was born in 1945 to parents Ellwood and Pauline (Tarnacki) Pitt, of Jersey City, NJ. Walter graduated from Paramus High School, NJ in 1965 and attended Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.
He married Maureen Monica McCartney in May, 1966 in Spring Valley, NY. Walter and Maureen raised their two daughters Kelly Ann Pitt and Kendra Jeanne Pitt in Parksville, NY.
Walter had a successful 30-year career in law enforcement. He retired as the Deputy Superintendent at Woodburne from the New York State Department of Corrections in 1999. He was an active member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus and SHIELDS Chapter of Myrtle Beach. After several decades living in the Catskills and working throughout New York State at various correctional facilities and the Monticello Raceway, Walter and Maureen retired to South Carolina.
Walter was dedicated to his job and shared his dedication to public service with his daughters, both of whom served the nation in various capacities in the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard, and later NASA.
Outwardly appearing skeptical at the world, Walter had a heart of gold, and made you work for his laugh and affectionate approval. He will be greatly missed by his family, lifelong friends, colleagues, and his neighbors.
Walter is survived by his daughter Kelly (Pitt) Kabiri, grandchildren Bryn Kabiri and Andrew Kabiri, of Arlington, VA; Lindsay Edwards, of Oakley, CA, and Garrett Pitt, of Longs, SC. Walter is also survived by his sisters Gloria Smith (Bob) and Kathy Steele, both of Livingston Manor, NY, sister-in-law Sheila Tammaro (Joe), of Billerica, MA, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his daughter Kendra Pitt in 2020, and his beloved wife Moe, who passed away four days before him.
A public memorial will be held in Liberty, NY at a future date.
