It is with heavy hearts and great admiration that we announce the passing of Dr. Daniel Warren Weidner, a cherished father, grandfather, Marine veteran, and devoted history teacher who peacefully left us at the miraculous age of 99 on March 4, 2026.
Born on February 23, 1927 in Summit, New Jersey, Daniel’s extraordinary life was marked by so very many accomplishments and adventures.
At the age of 17 while still in high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he was stationed overseas, having served four years. Upon returning home, he finished his high school diploma and went on the achieve 2 bachelor degrees, 2 masters, and a doctorate from his beloved University of Alabama, earning him the nickname “Doc”. His teaching career in the Livingston School District spanned over three decades, inspiring his students as a history teacher.
Daniel’s commitment to teaching extended beyond the classroom; where he was known for bringing history to life through engaging storytelling and his writing, having published several books.
The man was a marvel and avid outdoorsman, accomplished athlete, and world traveler. Mountain climbing was his passion, becoming a member of the High Pointers Club, having summited the highest points in all 50 states. Other climbs included Peru, Chile, and Ecuador to name a few. At 72, he rode his bike from Livingston, NJ to Seattle, WA. At 85, he walked the entire Burma Road. At 91, he stood on the Great Wall of China. His trips are marked by pins on the world map that still hangs on the wall in his study.
He had an exceptional ability to connect with students, fostering a love for learning that many carried into adulthood. His impact was felt not only in the subjects he taught, but also in the lives he touched. Area residents of all ages would be caught by surprise when seeing him at a local diner or at the bagel store in town where a welcomed invitation to sit down for a heartfelt conversation would likely ensue. His impact was felt not only in the subjects he taught, but also in the lives he touched.
In addition to teaching, he was a passionate advocate for veterans, and a published writer, having written books from The Revolutionary War to The Constitution, and many subjects in between. Writing was his passion later in life.
Most of all, Daniel was deeply committed to his family, who he considered his greatest accomplishment in life as his true pride and joy. He had an unstoppable desire to keep living life at its fullest, and belief that nothing would stop him from doing anything, at any age, which he instilled in his children. Being active was a significant part of spending time together - Taking bike rides, ice skating, horseback riding, camping…Never pushing, always encouraging.
He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Turanick (husband Tim and grandson Adam) and two sons, Daniel (wife Linda and daughter Danielle) and Christopher (husband Richard). Also survived by his sister Erika Weidner, who turned 101 years old last April, and Ellen Hock, his former wife and mother of his beloved children.
Daniel Weidner will be lovingly remembered for his unwavering spirit, dedication to his family, friends, and country, and profound influence he had as a teacher and mentor.
Semper Fi Daniel; always faithful, and always to be remembered by his stories and the lessons that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
A celebration of Daniel’s remarkable life will be held on Monday, March 9th from 4-8 PM, with a eulogy at 7PM, at Quinn Hopping Funeral Home, Livingston, NJ. The family asks that donations be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School (www.stjo.org).
