Apparently, Jesus wanted him to be in heaven to celebrate Easter, and we find joy in that thought. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. Barbara’s tender care for him in his final months was nothing short of remarkable. She poured herself out completely as his caregiver, and the family will always be grateful for the loving way she looked after Arvid until the very end.
On March 20th, 1938, Arvid was born right there in the farmhouse in Mead, CO to John Henry and Mollie (Betz) Fiechtner. Arvid graduated from Mead High School in May 1955, and soon after entered the U.S. Army, where he served as a mechanic from 1958-1960. His time in the service included a tour in Germany, a place that held special meaning for him and his family because of their German heritage.
On August 4th, 1961, Arvid married the love of his life, Barbara Tomczak at Mead EUB Church. Together, they established the character of our family – one built on integrity and a strong work ethic - by faithfully demonstrating these values for over 40 years on the Fiechtner family farm, Long Mountain View Dairy. Arvid and Barbara’s grit and love for Jesus have kept our family bonds strong for generations now.
Arvid was a man who believed in serving his community. Along with his brothers and other men from the small town of Mead, he helped establish the Mead Volunteer Fire Department and remained involved for many years.
A longtime member of Gideons International (Longs Peak/Longmont chapter), Arvid faithfully shared God’s Word by placing Bibles in hotels and witnessing at schools and colleges-wherever the Lord opened doors. Psalm 100 was one of his favorites. An avid outdoorsman, he hiked Longs Peak several times in the early 1960’s when cables were required to reach the summit. He was also a skilled shooter who placed 2nd in the quick-draw competition in Leadville, Colorado, and enjoyed hunting arrowheads at Wildcat. Arvid was a gifted problem-solver and inventive tinkerer who created countless unique contraptions for the farm and home that could not be bought in any store.
After retiring and selling the dairy cows in 1990, Arvid joined his sons at their machine shop in Hygiene, CO. He particularly enjoyed the daily lunch runs, when four grown men would squeeze into a single-cab pickup with a bench seat. The sight was comical – nothing but shoulders visible, with Arvid, affectionately known as “Skinny,” always planted right in the middle.
Arvid was a quiet, steady, and hardworking man who loved his family, his farm, and his faith. His life was marked by simple joys, strong hands, and a faithful heart.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children John, Mitch (ReGay), Todd (Cindi), his grandchildren, Connor (Stephanie), Sarah Travis (Jesse), Alyssa, and Jake. His great-grandchildren, Abigail, Mabel and Gwen Fiechtner, Joseph, Evelyn, and Elsa Travis, and his sister Romona Stotts, his nephew Kevin (Tammy) Fiechtner, as well as other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mollie, and his brothers Harvey and Raymond Fiechtner.
Per Arvid’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Longmont’s Mountain View Cemetery, facilitated by Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family humbly asks you to spread the Good News of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to everyone you meet. If you don’t know Jesus…find Him!
