AVIS DE DÉCÈS

Bessie Burchard Walkden

3 janvier 1934 – 11 mai 2025
Avis de décès de Bessie Burchard Walkden
AUX SOINS DE

Howe Mortuary & Crematory

Bessie “Bess” Walkden passed peacefully in her home on May 11, 2025, in Longmont, Colorado. She was surrounded by her children and held in love during her final moments. She was 91 years old.

Born Bessie Schilcher on January 3, 1934. After the loss of her mother, Bess was mostly raised by her extended family. From them, she learned resilience, humility, and a quiet strength that would become the foundation of her life.

Even as a young woman, Bess embodied quiet independence and curiosity. She once toured the state of Pennsylvania on her three speed Raleigh bicycle with her friend. She also found joy and freedom in sailing, drawn to the quiet grace of wind and water. That same grace would echo throughout her life.

Bess was the beloved wife of the late Richard David “Dave” Walkden, whom she met while leading a Christian youth group. Together, they created a home filled with unwavering love.

She is survived by her son and his wife Richard and Anne Walkden, her daughter Katherine Walkden, and by Steve Calla, whom she loved and regarded as a son. She also outlived her two sisters, Anne and Joyce, and held their memories close to her heart.

Bess gave her life to service. A devout Christian and trained interfaith chaplain, she devoted herself to helping others: volunteering at hospitals, delivering meals through Meals on Wheels, working in soup kitchens and clothing banks, and offering care wherever it was needed. She extended this care beyond her immediate family, helping raise and guide children and adolescents, who became part of her wide and welcoming circle of love.

Her hands were always working with purpose. She was an avid crafter—knitting, weaving, and doing needlework that often reflected her deep faith. She was also a passionate baker, making bread regularly and, on more than one occasion, sharing her talents on local television. Sometimes, she even bartered her fresh bread for goat’s milk from a nearby farmer.

Her final days were peaceful, and her passing on the eve of Mother’s Day feels deeply symbolic, a tender reflection of the steadfast love she gave.

Bess will be interred in the Memorial Garden at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Guilford, Connecticut, her longtime spiritual home, where she will rest beside her beloved husband, Dave.

Services will be announced. In lieu of flowers or donations, please carry her gift of service forward by offering care to those in need.

She will be missed dearly and will always be remembered for her faith, her warmth, and the life of service she lived with quiet grace.
