Carl was born and raised in northeastern Kansas, lived in western Washington for about twenty years, and had lived in Frederick for the past seven years. Every place he has been has been made better for it.
Carl was known for many things: his humor, his smoked meats, his humility, his intelligence, his enthusiasm for the Seattle Seahawks, his tech-savviness, his hospitality, his faith, and his eagerness to help. “Put me to work,” he would often say, “I’m here to help.” Throughout the course of his struggles with ALS, people often commented on his humility and peace. Carl had the gift of humor, and brought laughter and joy to the lives of everyone he knew.
Carl is survived by his wife, Cindy Mies, of 33 years, to whom he adoringly referred as his “lovely bride,” his children, Beth (“Goose”) and JC (“Chuckles”), as well as his mother, Lorene Mies, and his siblings, Rita, Mike, Mark, Paul, and Greg. He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Mies. He loved all of them tremendously.
