Carol Elizabeth Zuber of Cheyenne, WY, formerly of Longmont and Firestone, CO, passed away on July 9, 2024 in Cheyenne. She was born on January 24, 1952 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Josephine (Grbac) Golas. She was the youngest of nine children.
Carol grew up in the East Side neighborhood of Chicago with her twin sister, Ruth, and her other siblings. Carol and Ruth’s childhood friends were also twin sisters who lived across the alley. Carol and one of those twins have remained close friends from that time. After the death of her father, Carol’s mother moved the family to Kansas. Although there for less than a year before moving back to Chicago, Carol made another lifelong friend.
Carol moved to the Longmont, CO area in 1976 with her two daughters, Lisa and Jill Kurnik. There she met Paul Zuber in 1978. They fell in love and, with the blessing of her children, were married on July 24, 1982 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Her maid of honor became another lifelong friend. Later, she met and developed another lifelong friendship that continued even though her friend moved to Arkansas. Distance or time never diminished Carol’s special friendships or family connections.
Carol held jobs in the insurance industry, retail sales and real estate until hired by the St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont. She learned and excelled at every job she held because she always wanted to do the best job she could. She was the ‘poster child’ for customer service. Her last position was as an office secretary at Longs Peak Middle School – a job she truly loved because of her interactions with the children.
While Carol occasionally enjoyed dropping a coin in a slot machine, playing bingo, scratching off lottery tickets, camping and fishing, what mattered most to her throughout her life was her family (immediate and extended), friends, co-workers and even the students during her LPMS days. Carol had an innate gift of getting to know people within minutes of meeting them. She was friendly and talkative, but because of her caring nature, people just felt naturally comfortable around her. Her ability to bring others into her heart was influenced by her wanting to do the best for others. She had a loving nature, was generous and loved to have fun. These qualities endeared her to just about everyone she met. Her immediate family enjoyed her as a loving mother, wife and grandmother. Her siblings, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends adored her. Carol truly lived by “The Golden Rule.”
Carol is survived by her loving, devoted husband Paul Zuber; her wonderful daughters and sons-in-law Lisa & Michael Brown and Jill & Tony Woods – both of Firestone, CO; Brothers Joseph Golas of Astoria, OR, and Donald (and wife Darcy) Golas of Evanston, IL; Sisters Dorothy Richardson of Peoria, AZ and Patricia (and husband Ron) Webster of Longmont, CO; Many Nieces and Nephews; and Grandchildren Paris Woods, Kievan Brown, Taggar Woods, Zachary Brown, Rio Woods and Jazz Woods. While Carol loved all her grandchildren, being a twin herself, she was tickled pink that her youngest grandchildren were also twin girls.
She is preceded in death by her twin sister Ruth Golas and sister Elaine Golas; Brothers John Golas and Stephen Golas.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Carol’s honor to the Davis Hospice Center of Cheyenne, WY or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
Carol was wonderful in so many ways and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
