Charlie succumbed to his battle with colon cancer, peacefully, in the early morning hours of April 22, 2026. He passed at home, with family, on his own terms. Charlie was born in Denver, CO, on February 1, 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack R. Janney and Margaret "Peg" Janney (nee MacKay). He is survived by his brother Hugh, sister-in-law Madeline Finch, nieces Lauren Elizabeth Janney, and Hilary Rose Janney, and step-children Daniel Lindgren, Virginia (Jon) Campbell, and Lori Lindgren.
While born in Colorado, Charlie spent most of his educational years in Glenview, IL, where his family had moved in the 1950's to consult on the Illinois Tollway construction. His father, Jack, soon started the structural engineering firm now known as Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE).
Charlie graduated from Glenbrook South High School in 1967, where he was a long-time record-holding swimmer. In the Fall of 1967, after receiving a perfect score on the math portion of his college entrance exam, he enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, where he graduated with a BS in Mathematics in 1971.
Charlie became a nurse in the 1970's and served in that career for over 40 years. He worked in different parts of the Country, mostly in emergency rooms. Having moved back to Colorado for the second half of his career, he found the work in the level 1 trauma center to be both challenging and rewarding.
It was while working as an emergency room nurse that he was asked to volunteer and join a group of doctors on a mercy trip to Central America. While working in Nicaragua, Charlie saw a need for qualified nursing candidates to be funded for the national nursing education program. His passion then became funding a program to get the nursing candidates educated. In his later years, Charlie would make many trips to Nicaragua to mentor the candidates through school. The appreciation was very evident when, in his final days, dozens of text messages and phone calls came in from Nicaraguan nurses expressing their appreciation for all Charlie had done.
As per Charlie's wishes, there is no memorial service. His ashes will be sent to Nicaragua to be dispersed by the appreciative nurses he had mentored.
