Danny Ernest Martinez

Danny E. Martinez, of Longmont, died March 19, 2016 at Longmont United Hospital at the age of 87. Danny was born July 27, 1928 in Chama, New Mexico. He moved to Longmont with his mother Elvinia Martinez Borrego. He was raised by his loving grandparents Celestino and Gregorita Martinez.

Danny attended St. John’s Catholic School through the 8th Grade. He was a 1946 graduate of Longmont High School where he was a participant on the football, baseball, track and tennis teams. He played competitive softball with local teams around the state for many years. Still an avid sports fan, he loyally followed and kept up on local teams and leagues. On February 21, 1949 Danny enlisted in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1953. On September 30, 1968 he married Mary Josephine Ortiz in Fort Collins, CO.

Danny’s working career was spent as a mover with Golden Van Lines, where he worked 47 years, retiring in 2013. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the American Legion. His greatest joy was spending precious time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered for his meticulously kept lawn and flower gardens. A practical joker, he was infamous for his joke telling and stunts pulled on family and friends.

Surviving are his wife Mary Martinez of Longmont; his daughter Michelle (Jose Flores) Martinez of Longmont; his grandchildren Desi Martinez, Jarrod Aragon and Antonio Martinez of Longmont and his great grandchildren Destiny Martinez and Jocelyn Aragon. He is further survived by his sisters Rose Olivas, Annie Aycock and Pat Dice and God Children Manuel Ortiz, Dana Savage, and Veronica Portillo. Danny was preceded in death by his mother and his daughter Katherine Martinez and a sister Mary Ryan.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 24 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
