Darcy had many adventures in her long and full life but some of her biggest began after she began adopting children in 1980. Below is an excerpt from her autobiography that she included in her first adoption application.
Circa 1980: I am close to all family members, we are very loving and warm to each other. I cry when I am happy and when I am sad. I am generally a nurturing person, very responsible, not prone to panic, able to tolerate a great deal of stress, a good listener, enjoy family, people in general. I am empathetic, compassionate, self-dependent and loyal. I am determined, faithful and on occasion flirtatious. If I am not careful I am sometimes critical, and can very easily be sarcastically witty. I am outspoken and straightforward…But I am not cruel.
I have a passion for Scrabble, and watching Ballets and folk dances. I enjoy classical music and opera and rock and roll. I am a practiced beginner skier and love swimming and walking and bicycling on occasion. I am a gourmet cook and am passable at needlework. I like to read for relaxation.
Darcy adopted eight children and had 9 grandchildren. She touched the lives of too many to count or name and will be remembered for her loving heart, sarcastic sense of humor and her never ending quest to present the most outrageous gifts to all of her loved ones (thrift store purchases only).
Darcy’s passing has provoked many family members to share their thoughts, feelings and memories. We would like to share one such example that touched our hearts. “Our beautiful, courageous, outrageously funny, impossibly generous and selfless, powerfully loving and forgiving Aunt Darcy passed away last night. After the wave of shock, the loss, the sadness and the emptiness appear and our hearts bleed. This woman was a monument. She saved more lives through love than she will ever likely know. She made miracles happen through my beautiful cousins that she brought into our crazy family. Too many emotions are clouding my mind, but it’s an incredible thing when you are remembered through tears and laughter simultaneously. Safe journey Aunt Darcy! I understand why you snuck out the back door, you never would have had our permission to leave. Love to all my Colorado crew. Xoxoxo” – Josianne Gauthier
