Dennis Scott Heil, age 65, of Longmont, CO passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side the morning of Wednesday, September 6. Dennis was born in Boulder, CO on August 8, 1958, to Marvin Leroy Heil and Donna June (Martindale) Heil Eich, both deceased. Preceding him in death also are his mother and father-in-law, Fred and Betty Lehman, Nappanee, IN.
Growing up in Longmont, Dennis graduated from Longmont High in 1976. While holding a variety of early careers from being a machinist to becoming a chief engineer at hotel properties; Dennis was blessed to travel the country from Napa, CA to the Chicago suburbs. His heart was always in Colorado and returned to his beloved state to become a BAS project manager with Trane. Some of his proudest moments with Trane was the opportunity to work on the construction of Coors Field and the Pepsi Center, now Ball Arena. With the relentless desire to provide for his family, pursuit of quality and a tireless work ethic, he formed his own HVAC controls company in 2008 aptly named Control Tech. His business took him from Northern Colorado, Denver metro, the Western slope and even Nebraska.
A simple visit to a Boulder travel agency in 1984 changed Dennis’ life in the best possible way. That is where he would meet his soon-to-be wife of 37 years, Julie (Lehman) Heil. Their love was beyond compare and their time together was filled with amazing adventures, concerts, and travels that ultimately was completed by bringing two children into this world. Dennis and Julie had made it a goal to hike in as many National Parks as possible. Though they had hoped for many more together, they did enjoy 25 Parks. Great memories of wonderful moments.
Dennis not only had a love of music, he truly appreciated every aspect of it; the history, the musicians, and their backstories. Expanding over several genres and generations, his playlist was varied and wonderful. It was always great listening to his stories of concerts back in the day. Even better was being treated to an evening of his song choices. Collecting vintage concert posters was a hobby he also enjoyed. Dennis volunteered his time to the Colorado Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Dennis was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan and a forever CU Buffs fan having held season tickets for football for many years. It is a special memory the family has of sharing his last game watching the Buffs upset TCU.
Without question he was home when he was in his Colorado mountains. He always thanked God for the beauty he was able to respect and thoroughly enjoy. The term ‘one with nature’ speaks of Dennis. Fishing, camping, hiking, watching wildlife, dirt bike riding on so many trails, staying at the family cabin, appreciating every little detail of nature… those were his happy places.
Dennis would say any of the above written words would mean nothing without his family. Family was everything to him. His son, Jacob (Morgan), granddaughter Raegan Heil of Milliken, and Christie (Nate) Ward of Loveland, along with his wife Julie, survive him. Their happiness and wellbeing were always in the forefront of his mind and actions.
Along with his immediate family Dennis is survived by his sister, Deanna (Dan) Walworth, of Brighton. Dee was the loving donor of the kidney he received 7 years ago. His entire Indiana family meant so much to him and was thankful he was able to let them know this from afar.
Dennis endured health issues for many years. He approached them all with determination, strength, and the highest degree of character. ‘Warrior’ is certainly a term used by many to describe him though he would never agree. Dennis was much more interested in how you were doing and rarely talked about his health. A fellow chemo patient said he made a footprint on her heart. This is of no surprise as Dennis had a calm presence in people’s lives. He had a deep sense of soul and spirit, and he put a lot of love into the world.
Memorial celebration of life will be at The Community House, Chautauqua Park, Boulder, CO on Sunday, October 29 at 3:00pm. Memorial contributions can be made to the PKD Foundation. Howe Mortuary, Longmont, has been entrusted with arrangements. Please feel free to leave comments for the family on their website.
Though this extremely rare, very aggressive cancer was something Dennis and the family kept fairly private, there were still many that reached out with love, support, and so many prayers. We would like to thank all of you for that. The family would also like to thank the various medical teams, specialists, and providers that cared for him and who have reached out to share how special he was.
”Be good to each other and be kind.”
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howemortuary.com for the Heil family.
