Born 1940 in Charleston, West Virginia, Elizabeth first pursued a career in classical violin, but decided instead to follow her true passion and calling as a pastoral counselor.
After marrying the love of her life, Father Bruce Moncrieff, in 1975, the two spent the rest of their lives together in service to others. Together, they faithfully and joyfully served as interim pastors to 18 different congregations throughout Colorado and New England, traveling with their dachshunds, whom they loved dearly. After the death of husband in 2008, Elizabeth moved to Longmont CO to be closer to those she considered family, and immediately became immersed in a variety of volunteer work, including providing a soothing Taize experience every Tuesday in the chapel at Longmont United Hospital.
She was brilliant and wise, and had a touch when it came to connecting with others, and had a particular knack for connecting with young adults. Described by one young friend as "the oldest teenager you'll ever meet”, Elizabeth always kept a supply of ice cream bars, cookies, chocolate, and a variety of coffee drinks. On many occasions, those supplies were raided, and Elizabeth simply loved that. She had a very creative mind and never let anything get in the way of her independence, or the experiences she wanted to have in life, even after being wheelchair bound by MS. Where there was a will, you better believe Elizabeth would find a way, and simply milk this life for everything it had to offer in all of its glory and beauty, and she loved the thought of others finding the things in life that "made their heart sing".
She was genuinely interested in the lives of all she met. A health food fanatic Elizabeth certainly was not. Always entertaining was her reaction to any suggestion of eating a salad. ("Why on earth would anyone want to eat weeds?” she's ask in horror.) She much preferred a burger, Taco Bell, or an afternoon outing to Country Buffet, and her excitement over onion strings was an experience to witness! In direct reflection to her enthusiasm for onion strings, her only food rule was that there must be absolutely no tomatoes!
Elizabeth is survived by the children of her husband, Kenneth Moncrieff and his wife Amy, Kathleen Moncrieff and her husband Rob Stannard, as well as her unofficially adopted family, Arlene and Fiona Patterson, countless friends, and a nation wide church family.
Pastor Garrett Struessel will conduct a memorial service for Elizabeth at 10:30 a.m. on Monday March 4th at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 803 3rd Avenue, Longmont. Following the service, light refreshments will be served in the Fireside Room (ice cream, no salad, and certainly no tomatoes).
