I was Eric's youth basketball coach for several years. I called him my "secret weapon" because he was not the most athletic player but he was very productive doing all the things that help a team win but go unnoticed. He was a fast learner, unselfish and a real team player. A delight to coach. I will always remember Eric and my condolences to all of his friends and family.

My memories of Eric reflect the understated person he was in that no big event stands out; he was just consistent, happy go-lucky, and someone who made me feel at ease when I was with him. He knew how to give me a good roasting, but do it from a place of endearment. My many happy memories include: a magical baseball summer with a TON of time spent hanging out in his dingy basement (I might be misremembering shag carpet), volleyball at the Res (he was good, I was not), boxing on the front lawn, running stairs as punishment for goofing off during baseball practice, and being locker partners in high school (he was always good for a wry comment during passing period). I vividly remember his baseball swing, which was a lot like he was; solid and dependable. He never went for the home run but could be counted on for a single or double. 

The downside of a person being understated is we often take them for granted and become focused on the noisier things in life. I wish I could go back and pay less attention to those things to spend more time with Eric. Thank you for that lesson, my friend. I will miss you.  See you again someday. 


My condolences to Susan, Katelyn, William and the rest of Eric's family. It's hard to believe such a kind hearted and caring person is now gone. Eric was by far the most sincere person I ever knew and a great friend.

I read the word wagering and several good memories came to mind. The one that I will never forget:  At a Chinese restaurant in Boulder, Eric challenged me to eat all of the hot mustard given to us in one bite and told me he would give me 5 bucks to do so. I said no to 5 bucks but accepted the challenge at 20 dollars. Eric was laughing out of pure enjoyment for the next four hours as the heat comes very slowly!! I will never forget his smiles; he was always smiling and had a way to put smiles on the people around him.

Eric was a great person who always gave and did not expect anything in return. You will be deeply missed my friend.

I am TJ Mahony’s mom and, yes, I adored Eric. I loved his warm smile and gentle soul. I loved taking him to basketball games (junior high?) The picture I wish I had taken but is imprinted in my memory is of him sitting by himself in the Platt Jr. High stands during a game, doing his homework instead of playing because he hadn’t gotten signed off by all his teachers. I was a teacher and he politely listened to my lecture. It was always a bluebird day when I got to spend time with Eric. 

Eric was my first friend in 1st grade.  He sat next to me bc we were arranged in alphabetical order.  I remember he immediately started talking to me and wanting to play - likely with a ball. 

This began a lifelong friendship.  We won sports titles together, drank underage for the first time together (sorry Mom), camped, traded baseball cards and most recently went to a Red Sox game together when he was stationed in Boston.  

My father called him the “secret weapon” bc he was under spoken, but such a good athlete.  My mother adored him and he went through life making only friends - never enemies.  He was the definition of “salt of the earth”.  

You will be dearly missed my friend.
