Ernie proudly served in the Colorado Army National Guard. During his service, he was called upon to assist in the aftermath of a United Airlines crash east of Longmont, demonstrating his willingness to serve others in times of need. Ernie graduated from Longmont High School in 1954.
On July 23, 1961, Ernie married the love of his life, Carole Jean Morison. For 64 years, theirs was a marriage filled with deep love and affection. Ernie fondly and faithfully referred to Carole as his “Loveliest Rose” a reflection of the enduring bond they shared. Together, they raised three children—Terri, Brenda, and Scott—in Longmont, where Ernie built not only a home, but a legacy of kindness and connection.
Ernie was a familiar and friendly face throughout his working years. From Brillhart Grocery and Food Giant to Safeway and Texaco, and ultimately retiring from King Soopers in 2016, he formed lasting friendships wherever he went. His genuine warmth and easy conversation made a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
A man of faith, Ernie and his family were longtime members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. His faith was a quiet but steady presence in his life.
Ernie had a deep and spirited love for Colorado sports, especially the Denver Broncos. He cheered faithfully for all of Denver’s teams—the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and Colorado Rockies—but his devotion to the Broncos was unmatched. He even dedicated an entire room in his home to the team, proudly displaying the many gifts and memorabilia he received over the years.
Above all, Ernie cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for those he loved, and his presence was a steady source of support, laughter, and unconditional care. Ernie lived a life defined by devotion to his family, his community, and the simple joys that brought people together.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Carole VanSteelandt; his children, Terri Smith (Keith) of Aledo Texas, Brenda Pahlke (Randy) of Frederick Colorado, and Scott VanSteelandt (Tim Pecore) of Erie Colorado; his grandchildren, Bret Smith (Lindsey), Brian Smith (Courtney), Amber Pahlke, Todd Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Colt and Aubrey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elsie Schell.
A service to celebrate Ernie’s life will be held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. A graveside service with military honors at Mountain View Cemetery will immediately follow.
Ernie will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering love for his family, and the friendships he built throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
