Eileen Shustar Comiskey was born June 25, 1927 in Pueblo, Colorado, to Joseph and Josephine Shustar. She attended Pueblo Central High School where she met the love of her life, Robert Comiskey. They were married April 24, 1946, when Bob returned from service in WWII with the Navy Seabees.
Their daughter, Kathie, was born the following year. Eighteen months later a second daughter, Susan, was born with cystic fibrosis. Eileen and Bob did everything they could to get Susan the best medical care available, spending many weeks at her bedside in Denver Children’s Hospital. They lost Susan in 1951. They adopted daughter Judy in 1954 and eight months later daughter Terrie was born.
She was involved with her children’s activities serving on the PTA and as a Girl Scout Assistant Leader.
Eileen was a woman of many talents who could do anything she put her mind to. She held a wide variety of jobs including pharmacy assistant, store detective and later jewelry buyer for Crew Beggs, parish secretary at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Pueblo. She and Bob opened Key Heating and Air Conditioning and she managed the office for many years. When they closed Key Heating and Air Conditioning Bob and Eileen moved to Denver where they managed large apartment complexes. In 1987 they moved to Greeley, Colorado, where Eileen worked for her son-in-law’s business Greeley Physicians for Women and teaching senior citizen exercise classes for Aims Community College. She ended her career at the Greeley Monument Works.
Eileen was always active in her church and community. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi (President), Altrusa (President), American Businesswomen’s Association (Secretary). She also worked as program director for the Pueblo YWCA where she taught classes and was instrumental in opening a shelter for battered women. As a volunteer probation officer, she counseled women at the Colorado State Penitentiary Women’s Division in Canon City.
She and Bob lead Marriage Encounter Weekends around the country. After battling ovarian cancer, she worked with CanSurmount helping other victims of the disease. She was an ambassador for the Greeley Place. Eileen always believed that helping others gave the greatest satisfaction. Where she saw a need she worked to fill it. She never knew a stranger and her door was always open. If you needed something done, she was the one you could rely on.
Her family was always the most important thing in Eileen’s life. She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Bob of Longmont; daughter Kathie (Don) Dolce of Longmont and children Amy Sage of Victor, Montana and Susan (Sean) Lynch of Berthoud; daughter Judy (Brad) Sprague of McKinney, Texas and children Candace (Jake) Jones of Greeley, Brittany Sprague of McKinney, Texas, Brandon (Jessica) Sprague of Fate, Texas; daughter Terrie (Stewart) Abbot of Greeley and children Harper (Katie) of Derby, Kansas and Quin (Christina) of Eaton; her great grandchildren Brittan Walker; Ruby and Levi Sage, Anna LaCroix; Delia and Keegan Lynch; Bailey Poff, Logan Crowder; Kytalynn Sprague; Emily, Lainey, Bekah, Titus, Maggie and Juliet Abbot; her nieces Chris (Ron) Armstrong, Carolynn (Patrick) Scully, Cindy Carter, Mindy (David) Arguello, Merrie Ellen (Paul) Bush and nephew Michael (Lori) McIntyre; numerous cousins and extended family and friends.
