A life of adventure, family, friends & projects ended for Hans Post van der Burg, 64, on November 11, 2013. He was born in Rotterdam, Holland on November 23, 1948. He emigrated with his parents Willem & Magdalena and siblings Clasina, Willem and Gerard to Boulder, Colorado in December 1956. The family owned Magdalena’s Famous Holland Restaurant & Bakery in downtown Boulder from 1957-1973. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1967, attended the University of Colorado and was a Vista Volunteer in Appalachian Kentucky in 1968-69. He married Nancy Wilson on October 11, 1970 and recently celebrated 43 years together with her.
They lived with their son and daughter in British Columbia, Canada from 1974- 1985 where he trained as a joiner and worked in construction as a member of The International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Returning to Boulder, they re-opened the family restaurant on 19th and Pearl from 1986-89. He received an Associate’s Degree in Architectural Technology from Front Range Community College in 1992 and owned Post Construction until his death, specializing in drafting, residential renovation and cabinetry. Many friends and clients are left with the legacy of his talented work.
Despite battling esophageal cancer for the last five years, he continued to live life to the fullest. In 2008 son Sasha Michael, 40, married Michele Granger in New York and daughter Sara Louise, 37, married Eric Pattemore in Colorado. He was there for the births of Sara & Eric’s daughters Lily in 2009 and Catie in 2011- his precious granddaughters. He and Nancy sold their renovated historic home in Longmont in 2009 and moved to Niwot in anticipation of retiring and moving to their vineyard in San Rafael, Argentina. He completed building projects in Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Vancouver, BC. He and Nancy traveled to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Curacao, throughout the United States and Canada, often in their 1984 VW Westfalia camper dubbed The Tangerine Dream. He also loved reading, gardening, bicycling, kite flying and storytelling.
A celebration of life reception will be held Saturday, November 23 from 1:00-4:00 pm at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), 1850 Table Mesa Dr, Boulder, Colorado 80305. As Hans most desired for the world to become a better place, the family is requesting that any contributions be sent to the charity of your choice to achieve that goal.
