Isabell was born on July 2, 1935, at the Columbine coal mining camp in Erie, Colorado, to the late Andrew Monares of Durango, Mexico, and Antonia Reynoso of Guadalajara, Mexico. Drawn by the boom of the American coal mining industry, her parents settled in Erie, where they raised their two children, Henry and Isabell.
Isabell attended Erie High School, graduating at just 16 years old. Her first job was tying fly fishing lures. She then worked as a bilingual aide in the St.Vrain Valley School District for 30 years. During this time, she formed lasting bonds with countless students, many of whom remained in contact and carried her love with them well into adulthood.
Leo Martinez Sr. was cruising through Erie when he first met Isabell. The two married on April 14th, 1956, and later moved to Firestone in 1998. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2006 before Leo’s passing in 2007. Isabell is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Leo Jr. and Angela Martinez, as well as her daughter and son-in-law, Tina Martinez, and Wael Awad. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Jessica Martinez, Tyler Martinez, and Abby Awad. In addition, she is remembered by many extended family members and friends who will miss her deeply.
Isabell had no fear and was truly up for anything. Her calm presence made everyone around her feel safe, loved, and at ease. A devout Catholic with the most gentle soul, she deeply loved her in-laws, which was wholeheartedly reciprocated. To her immediate family, Izzy was everything and the very best co-pilot anyone could ever ask for. She was an extraordinary woman, and her loss will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Arrangements are being handled by Howe Mortuary with internment at Foothills Garden of Memory, Longmont, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make donations in Isabell’s name to Bristol Hospice of Northern Colorado.
