A true Colorado native, Jim was born in Brighton, Colorado to Ivan and Cleda Hanan Barnett. He was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship and the Order of DeMolay which elected him Master Counselor during his senior year.
Upon graduation from Brighton High School he enrolled at the University of Colorado and after his freshman year joined the Navy. He spent his four-year tour of duty as a photo interpreter with the flight squadrons on the aircraft carriers USS Forrestal and USS Shangri-La. Honorably discharged, he returned to the classroom at CU, reunited with the Calico and Boots Square Dance Club and Exhibition Team and pursued certification as a CPA. Graduation took him to work in Denver, travelling around the state doing bank audits. It wasn't until 1976 that he returned to his beloved Calico and Boots and met Andy.
They were married in 1977 and danced through the next four decades together as members of Calico and Boots, High Country Dancers, and Colorado Dancers.
After a serious search, Jim and Andy found a loving church home at First Baptist Church in Longmont. Jim was welcomed into the choir and loved singing with the praise team. In 1996 they were baptised and officially joined the church.
When numbers lost their charm, Jim turned to words and finished his working career as a proofreader for Westview Press, a scholarly publishing company in Boulder, Colorado.
Having played volleyball with friends for years he joined a Colorado Senior Volleyball Association league, playing teams all along the Front Range and competing several years in the Huntsman World Senior Games. When he could no longer play, Jim continued to support Andy's teams, a loyal and faithful fan.
Jim will be deeply missed and warmly remembered by his family and many friends.
A memorial service will be held on March 9, 2024 at 1pm at First Baptist Church, 701 Kimbark St. Longmont 80501.
