Jeffry Lee Lawson, 65, husband, father of five, grandfather of twenty-one, and friend of many, returned to his heavenly home on February 3, 2017 after a 7-year courageous battle with cancer. He passed peacefully in his sleep at Longmont United Hospital, Longmont, Colorado. He was born on January 5, 1952 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Don Lee and Lucille (Huxtable) Lawson. He graduated from Box Elder High School, Brigham City, Utah, in the Class of 1970. Jeff served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern Brazil and upon his return married the love of his life, Carol, in the Ogden LDS Temple. A graduate of Utah State University, he worked in education for IBM for 25 years. At the time of his death, he was employed at Magnelab in Longmont.
Jeff’s life included community service, music, award-winning photography, electronics, classic movies, traveling, being outdoors, amateur radio, and many other interests. Notwithstanding his many hobbies, his most treasured time was spent with loved ones. Jeff’s quick wit and humor will not be forgotten.
Jeff was a classically trained and gifted musician. As a teenager he was first chair trumpet in orchestra and marching band and was later honored with the prestigious John Philip Sousa Award. He continued to play both trumpet and piano at the collegiate level at Utah State University and enjoyed participating in the college’s jazz ensemble. He played in a live traveling dance band throughout college. Music was his passion. His children fondly remember listening to him play the piano as they fell asleep at night. As a jazz musician, he would often produce impromptu arrangements at the piano.
As a man of faith, he served in various capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including bishoprics, high councils, and several additional leadership roles. For a season, Jeff served as a Branch President for a Portuguese speaking congregation. He was a scriptorian and loved teaching and testifying of Jesus Christ.
He deeply loved his family. He loved people genuinely and was interested in talking and getting to know them beyond an acquaintance level. Courageous and stalwart in the face of adversity, Jeff often said of trials that life is an adventure.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Higley Lawson, his father, Don Lawson, his children, Matthew (Suzanne) Lawson, Brooke (Blake) Baker, Spencer (Danielle) Lawson, Brittany (James) Britsch, and Ashley Lawson.
