John W. Fitts

John W. ""Dubby"" Fitts, a native of Lyons, Colorado, died April 25, 2008 at the Hospice Care Center in Louisville. He was 83.John was born February 15, 1925 in Lyons to James and Beatrice (Morgan) Fitts. He grew up and attended school in Lyons. John entered the United States Navy in 1943 and served on the Mariana Islands in the South Pacific.John was involved with the timber business supplying lodge pole pine for the railroad in the Granby and Pleasant Valley area. He also had a sawmill business. John then worked in construction of tunnels through the mountains. For twenty years, John leased a quarry and owned and operated his own stone business in Lyons. He was a workaholic and inventor. He was always thinking about new ways of creating tools and procedures to improve the work he was involved in.John spent the last 37 years with the love of his life, Cora Farley whom he married in Boulder. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing pool, and joining others at the Golden Gang in Lyons.Mr. Fitts was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Terry Lee and Doug Fitts; a brother, Bobby Lee Fitts and a sister, Geraldine Kelly. John is survived by his wife Cora; a son, Ronald Fitts and his wife Cathy of Broomfield; a daughter, Sandy Quezada and her husband Jose of Longmont; four step children: Linda Webber and her husband Mark of Lyons, Terry King of Berthoud, Sheryl King-Lyle of Loveland, and Anne Mescerela and her husband Cere of Texas; a brother, Ray Edward Fitts of Kansas, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.Visitation will be held at Howe Mortuary on Wednesday, April 30th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral services with be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1st at The River Community Church, 18668 Highway 36, Lyons, CO with Pastor Mickey Lohr officiating.
