

John Henry Hains, Jr. passed away December 3, 2013, of cancer at his home in Berthoud, CO. He was 76 years old.John was born on April 20, 1937 in Altadena, California to John Henry, Sr. and Marie (Oliva) Hains. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 where he served on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier. He married Phyllis Huber in 1960, with whom he had three children: Kim, Jay and Pat. They divorced in 1980. He then married Cathy Stevenson in 1980, who died of cancer in 2000. On May 29, 2005, John married Christine Dellinger.In 1972, John moved his family to Loveland, Colorado where he bought a farm, learned to garden and raise different animals including goats. In 1978, he moved to Lyons, and for over 20 years ran the Dairy Lite Ice Kreme Shop in addition to driving a school bus up and down the canyon routes of Lyons. John retired in 2000, from both making medium twists and driving a school bus. His retirement years were spent with Christine enjoying many vacations and cruises; he worked tirelessly on his property behind Meadow Park, and even swept the chimney by himself until this past fall when he moved to Berthoud. John was an active member of Foothills Baptist Church in Lyons where he shared his love for music, participated in men's fellowship groups and Sunday school. He loved singing and playing the piano, he shared this love with anyone he could - sitting down to play a song or sing a jingle at the drop of a hat. John loved a good joke and shared them over and over and over. His favorite pastimes were solving sudoku and crossword puzzles, hiking, and enjoying the St. Vrain River. He also loved going to movies every week with his brother Frank, and spending time with his grandchildren who lovingly called him ˜Grandpa Goat' and ˜Papa'. His parents and his second wife, Cathy Hains, preceded him in death.John is survived by his wife Christine of Berthoud; his children Kim (Lee) Allen, Jay (Karen) Hains, and Pat (Chris) Hains; his step-children Dawn (Ignacio) Quintana, Jennifer Bebout, and Melissa (George) Mills; his brothers Louis, Chuck and Frank Hains; his sisters Helen Hay and Theresa Brodie; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and extended family and friends.A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013, at Foothills Baptist Church, 12650 North Foothills Hwy, Lyons, CO.
