John was born on October 31, 1955, in Los Angeles, California, just nine minutes before his twin sister, Mary. He grew up in a loving household with his parents, Michael and Margaret, two older sisters, an older brother, and a close-knit extended family. The family lived in Highland Park until John was five, then moved to San Gabriel, where their twin aunts and an uncle lived just blocks away. His childhood was filled with family visits, and daily after-school snacks with loved ones.
John attended San Gabriel Mission Elementary School before moving on to the local public high school, where he excelled academically, particularly in science and math. John also faced challenges with respiratory issues from a young age. Despite these health concerns, he nurtured a deep love for animals, especially dogs, a passion that began in childhood and lasted throughout his life.
After high school, John attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he embraced his Christian faith, becoming a born-again Christian. He was known for living out his beliefs with humility, kindness, and understanding, serving as a positive influence to many. His faith remained steadfast throughout his life, and he was always quick to see the good in others.
In the early 1980s, following medical advice to seek cleaner air, John moved from Los Angeles to Colorado, where he would make his home for the rest of his life. It was there he met and married Lynne and became a father to her son Jedidiah. Colorado proved to be a perfect fit for John—he found joy, friendship, and purpose in his church and men’s group, and he thrived in the community he built there.
Though life often kept John and his siblings busy with families, careers, and commitments, they reunited every Christmas at the family home in San Gabriel, creating cherished holiday memories.
John was known for his warm presence, his ability to light up a room, and the genuine smiles he brought to those around him. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering faith, and the love and kindness he shared so freely.
John is survived by his wife Lynne, his step-son Jedidiah, his sisters Mary Lichty (Peter), Katherine Poehlmann, Marilyn Griffis (Bill), brother Michael Medvetz (Lynda), his step-grandchildren Chason and Brooklyn, and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for John was held Thursday, August 21, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont, Colorado 80501, followed by a reception at 12:00 PM.
