

“Big John” passed away at his home October 14, 2021. He is survived by his parents Edward “Pete”, Dianne, brother Darrin and Aunt Ruth Gwin along with numerous cousins. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1985 and attended the University of Wyoming for a year before he joined the Navy where he served for 6 years. He was a radioman on the USS Puffer nuclear submarine and trained with the Navy Seals to qualify as a submarine diver.
For the past 10 years, he has worked for the VA. He was passionate about helping his fellow veterans. John was a Peer Support Specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs from 2011 until his death. In 2013, he helped open a 40-bed residential treatment center for homeless Veterans in Lakewood, CO. For the next 8 years, he helped hundreds of veterans struggling with homelessness, addiction and mental health problems.
His “Heart of Gold” finally gave out on him.
