Wow. My heart is broken. I’m just now finding out about John’s passing. I met John through a former family friend and knew John when he owned the Chameleon in Longmont. I was able to see him again a couple years ago at a friends house I was invited to. I can’t believe I’m just now finding out. I don’t know what else to say. RIP John. I’m going to miss you brother. 

John was such a nice guy to everyone around him. 

I'm only now learning of John's passing. I met John through the VA, and I know how many Veterans he helped by working at Valor Point  as a Peer Support Specialist.

John was a class act - a good listener, someone you knew you could share your problems with, and who would give you his support and encouragement.

John was my first best friend. I met John at age 4 or 5 growing up on Hilltop Dr in Longmont. We spent endless summers fishing together, catching crawdads, skateboarding to Elvis tunes, shooting our BB guns, riding his mini-bike, and so much more. I'll never forget John talking me into dressing up with him as his beloved hard rock/heavy metal band KISS for Halloween. I hated that music... but would do just about anything to spend time with John.  I was lost for awhile when John moved away in the 6th grade. However, as fate would have it we chose the same college (University of Wyoming) and I couldn't wait to be hanging with my pal again. John was a private person and somewhat reserved but once he opened up he was this thoughtful, caring person who would truly help anyone in need. I won't share some of the crazy things we did at U of W, but there was never a dull moment, and we always had the best times together.  John was a gift from god, and I was so fortunate to have him in my life. I was stunned to learn about his passing, but I will hold on to so many fond memories forever. John's parents, Pete and Dianne, should be extremely proud of how John lived his life, I know I am.

Where do I begin… I’ve read the other memories that people have shared.. on point. He looked out for others. My mother Karen told me two days ago ..” he was your protecter Jen” and she’s so right. He looked after me was concerned about me all through our school years.  You have friends through your life that you keep up with or reconnect later with, John always treated me like we’d been hanging out forever. There were years here & there that we didn’t speak or see each other but he always kept it as though we just saw each other last week. I have so many good awesome memories of him.. scorching all the hair off his legs at Adams house… I had a slumber party at my house one time watching scary movies & zack & Hohn showed up with chainsaw in hand acting out the chainsaw massacre. There is so many to list I’d have a book. He sent me letters & pictures when he enrolled in the navy.. I have them still. Ed & Dianne you should be proud of him he was a beautiful person. I love him still. Rest In Peace my protector… say hello to my dad. I’m sure he will give you a hard time there in heaven as he did here on earth. Blessed be my friend.

John Petersen, one of our nicest patients. Hello! I’m Dr Kidd, one of the doctors at Comfort Dental Bear Creek and, John’s dentist since 2016. He usually came to our office at 7:30 in the morning, have work done then go to work and teach classes at Valor. He was always dressed nicely in his pressed white shirt, his small electric fan and his oxygen tank in tow.
I remembered he needed a couple of implants and I told him I’ll refer him to the specialist. He asked if I knew how to do it and I said yes, but that I’m finishing my other classes and waiting for our implant unit. He said he’ll wait for me instead, and he did. His two were my first regular implants. 
Everyone in my office was sad to hear that he’s gone and remembers him as being so nice to each one of them.
We’ll miss seeing you around, John!

Where to begin… John was a wonderful human being. He was one of the best I’ve ever known. He was kind and compassionate, and would give a complete stranger the shirt off his back, and then tuck some cash in the pocket as well. And although he was a private person, those who knew him really knew him. He went from being a submariner in the Navy to doing piercings and designing tattoos. as well as  owning several tattoo shops. And from working at the VA helping homeless Veterans to becoming an amazing painter. His passions, though,  were helping others in need and painting. His artwork was an escape for him and he painted abstract scenes from his life. We would talk about the meaning behind some of his paintings and he would tell me what each one represented. 
He had dreams of opening a place for homeless Veterans to go for help and most of all to open his own art gallery, which he had planned out to a tee. From the glass walls to the lounge downstairs. And he wanted everyone to be able to see his paintings throughout the gallery. That’s the one thing I wish he had been able to bring to fruition. He was very proud of all his accomplishments, but especially proud of his art. 
So I wish everyone had gotten a chance to see the many sides of John. He wasn’t perfect, and may have had some flaws, but who doesn’t. He would tell me that in the end, your mistakes don’t make the man, but rather it’s what you did right in this world and the lives you touched. And John touched so many lives. I’m proud to call him my friend and he will sorely be missed. RIP Johnny

During high school, John went through a phase of jokingly telling everyone he was “worth millions“. I knew John pretty well and we generally hung out with the same crowd. It’s hard not to when your school is so small. But one time I got it in my head that I should ask him out. I remember calling him and saying, “John, you’re worth millions. Want to go to the drive-in tonight?“ He said yes. Pretty sure Zack Hoh came along too, probably as a safety buffer for John. I don’t remember what we saw, or really much about the evening, but my memory of him is a warm and appreciative one. He’ll be missed.
