

John McGraw Schumacher of Longmont, died March 31, 2006 at his home. John was born on April 1, 1929 in Tilden, Nebraska to Edward Henry Schumacher and Jane Kathryn Kingery Schumacher.John lived in Tilden until the family relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1944. He graduated from Lincoln's Northeast High School in 1946. John enlisted and served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948. His time at sea was spent on the USS Albany. Upon leaving the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where he studied from 1948-1951. In 1951 he was commissioned through ROTC as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He served on active duty in the USAF from 1952-1970, retiring at the rank of Major. Major Schumacher flew combat missions with the airborne refueling unit in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oakleaf Clusters and the Air Force Commendation Medal in addition to a number of medals for specific campaigns. On November 12, 1955, John Schumacher married Mary Concepta O'Shea in Cliftonville, Margate, England. After John's retirement from active duty, the Schumacher family settled in Longmont in 1971. John worked as an investigator in the US Civil Service Commission/Office of Personnel Management from 1974-1992, and was recognized as the OPM-Investigator of the Year in 1988. He retired in 1992. John was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Military Officers Association of America, Knights of Columbus, BPOE #1055, and the American Legion Post #32.He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Ralph and Byron Schumacher.He is survived by his wife Connie of Longmont, his eight children; Michael Schumacher and his wife Debbie of Steamboat Springs, Edward Schumacher and his wife Laurie of Manlius, NY, Patrick Schumacher and his wife Margaret of Tacoma, WA, Steven Schumacher and his wife Robyn of Denver, David Schumacher and his wife Jeannie of Broomfield, Katherine Schumacher of Mountlake Terrace, WA, Alan Schumacher of Seattle, WA, and Dr. Jill Schumacher and her husband Howard Gutstein of Houston, TX, fourteen grandchildren, and two sisters, Mary Rice, Middletown. OH, and Barbara Pitchske, Centennial. Vigil services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, April 2, 2006 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel, with Deacon Mike Behrens officiating. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 3, 2006 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with The Reverend Brian Morrow officiating. A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory.Interment of cremated remains will be at the Ft. Logan National Cemetery, with Full Military Honors to be provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard.Contributions may be made to Longmont Meals on Wheels, 910 Longs Peak Ave, Longmont, CO 80501.
