Larry Howard Everett

Larry H. Everett's soul took flight July 17, 2019 and returned to its home in the heavens. He was born May 27, 1936, to Anna Mae (Bottoms) and Bulah ˜Daddy Buck' Everett in Louisville, Kentucky.Larry was graduated from Central High School in Louisville and attended Indiana University, where he majored in mathematics and physics. He served in the Air Force/Air National Guard from 1954“1957. After leaving the Air National Guard, he worked as a janitor and salesman in the tire department of Sears, R buck and Co., married Betty French, and started their family, consisting of four sons: Larry H. Jr., Todd, Michael, and Brian. The three older sons were born in Louisville, KY, and Brian was born in Boulder, CO.In 1966 Larry joined IBM Corp., and he and Betty moved to Boulder. They moved to Longmont in 1970, which made them one of the first African American families to live in Longmont. At IBM, Larry initially worked in tape development as a senior lab technician, and obtained two US Patents; he later worked in technical writing, programming, and management. After retiring from IBM, Larry worked as a technical writer at StorageTek, Sun MicroSystems, and Covidien. No matter where he worked, Larry always made lasting friendships, because he was quick to share who he truly was. You could see that sparkle in his eyes when asked to share his philosophies and beliefs.Larry's enthusiasm for mathematics and physics continued throughout his life, even though his first love was flying. Years before obtaining his private pilot's license, Larry fulfilled that passion by building from plans and flying remote-controlled airplanes. Larry and Larry Jr. would often spend weekends flying their planes at the Longmont Aircraft Modelers Association's flying field.Once Larry achieved his private pilot's license, he enjoyed sharing that joy with friends by flying them along the Front Range. One year, Larry and his son, Michael, had the opportunity to participate in the Fighter Pilot for a Day event, in which they both flew T-34 advanced military trainer airplanes and engaged in mock dog-fights.Science fiction was another area of interest of Larry's. Every year he would get Hallmark's catalog of the new Christmas ornaments coming out, and he would be sure to get his orders in early for the annual Star Trek and Star Wars ornaments. He also wrote a couple of science-fiction novels, and he was happy to let you know if a current movie followed a similar plotline that he had come up with years earlier.In 1992, Larry married his long-time friend, Joan Strosin. They moved to Boulder and resided there with their dogs and cats until Larry's death.Larry was preceded in death by his oldest son, Larry Jr.; mother (Anna Mae Sands); father, (˜Daddy Buck' Everett); stepfather (Arthur G. Sands); and brother (Arthur Lynn Sands). He is survived by his wife, Joan Strosin; sons Todd Everett of Surprize, AZ, Michael Everett (Christl) of Longmont, CO, and Brian Everett (Alanna) of Thornton, CO; first wife, Betty Everett of Longmont, CO; brothers Jerry (Claudette) Everett and Lesley Sands; and sisters Sandra French and Deborah Hall; grandchildren Justin (Melissa), Chad (Jess), Matthew (Jay), Kayla, Ayla, and Lenna; and great-grandchildren, Miles, Leia, and Maeve.The family thanks the BCH nursing staff for their wonderful care, Dr. Jeff Carter for his investigative pursuits and frank discussions, Dr. Kristina Anton-Schnell for her outreach to us, and TRU Hospice and Accel in Longmont for their help in making Larry's last days as peaceful as possible.Contributions can be made to TRU Hospice, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Lafayette, CO 80026, or the Alzheimer's Association: Colorado Chapter, 455 Sherman St. #500, Denver, CO 80203.Memorial service will be held August 17 at 2 PM at Ahlberg Chapel, 326 Terry Street, Longmont, CO.
