
Leona Fay Simpkins, 93, of Longmont, went to be with the Lord on July 15, 2015. She was born September 9, 1921 in Willow Hill, Illinois to Pearl and Clara (Brenton) Hamilton. When she was a teenager the family moved to Hutchinson, KS where she graduated from High School. The family then moved to Pasadena, CA. During WWII Leona worked as a riveter installing rivets on the wings of B-25’s. At the end of the war she met Hubert Simpkins. They were married December 21, 1946 in Pasadena. Their two oldest children, Myrna and Curtis “Curt” were born in Pasadena. In 1956 the family moved to Boulder, CO where Hubert took a position as an aerospace engineer. He designed Cryogenic equipment for every manned space program from Mercury through the Shuttle. Leona and Hubert had a third child, Aleta, born in Boulder in 1960. The family moved from Boulder to Longmont in August on 1963.
Leona was very active in the Church of the Nazarene, and later in the Free Methodist Church. She served as a youth leader, sang solos and often entertained in her home.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, her husband Hubert and her daughter Aleta. She is survived by one sister, Thelma Patrick of Valrico, FL, her daughter Myrna (Stan) Duneman and her son Curtis “Curt” Simpkins and one grandchild, Andrew Duneman as well as several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015 at LifeBridge Christian Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, also at the Church. A reception will follow the services. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder, CO.
