

Leonard Joseph Helfrich passed away August 18, 2018 at Pathways Hospice Care Center in Loveland.He was born November 22, 1933 in Deshler, Nebraska to George and Dorothy (Monohon) Helfrich. The family moved to Boulder when Leonard was 7 years old. He attended Sacred Heart and graduated Boulder High School in 1952. He served 8 years in the Navy Reserves.He was a master sheet metal fabricator and worked at Boulder Metal and the sheet metal shop at CU. He also spent 10 years rebuilding damaged airplanes at the Longmont Airport.He held a Private Pilot's License and an aircraft A&P Mechanic License. He and his brother Carl built a BD-5, experimental airplane which is now at home at the Wings over Denver Air & Space Museum. He also had a passion for old cars.His pride and joy was the 1938 Buick that he restored. Leonard was a true Mr. Fix-it. He could make and fix nearly everything.He married Eddyce Lynch in Boulder in 1956 and they later divorced. He married Nancy L. Brush in Longmont in 1970.He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Carl and Alvin (Jim).He is survived by his wife Nancy, sons, Rodney (June) and Gregory; grandson Mark, granddaughter Amy and great grandson Noah all of San Jose, CA; brother, Arthur (Fran) of Aurora, and sisters Patty Woods, and Wilma (Charles) Rodgers of Loveland.A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM with visitation beginning at 12:30 PM on Thursday August 23, 2018 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Interment at Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Pathways Hospice in c/o Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
