Born in Greenville, South Carolina, to Nellie Mae and Perry Maxwell Smith, Nancy spent most of her childhood in Greenville and Clemson, South Carolina, and Auburn, Alabama. She later moved to Colorado with her second husband.
Nancy earned an Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education and completed her Director’s License, and accomplishment she was very, very proud of. Nancy spent most of her career as a preschool teacher and an Infant Center director. She loved the children as much as they love her.
Her favorite place was on the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama, and she vacationed there yearly for 20 years. She was an excellent cook and is best remembered for her southern fried chicken and cathead biscuits. She was an avid reader and an impressive Scrabble player. Among other things, Nancy was a passionate animal lover and adopted many pets over the course of her lifetime.
Nancy is survived by her sister, Maxine Rather; her daughter, Charlotte Cook; her grandson, Keegan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Among those who will especially miss her are Lisa, Kylie, Emery Fannin and Jamie Penn, to whom Nancy was like a mother and grandmother; and Carole Porter, who was Nancy’s friend and roommate for 35 years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Howe Mortuary in Longmont, Colorado on September 19th at 2:00 PM. A reception will be held afterwards at the home of Lisa and Gary Fannin. Directions will be provided.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and to any local animal shelter.
