

Pauline Martha (Hurd) Matteson left this world at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Applewood Living Center, Longmont, Colorado, after a long, active and loving life of 97 years. She leaves behind her beloved family and many friends.Born June 24, 1911, in St. Paul, Minnesota to Orville Ralph Hurd, D.O. and Bessie Craig Hurd, who both preceded her in death, she spent her early childhood years in Illinois. Her family moved to New York when she was 8 years old and spent 4 1/2 years of rural life on a farm in the foothills of the Catskills where she attended a rural school. She attended the 9th grade at Delaware Academy Public School in Delhi, New York. The family returned to Champaign, Illinois where she completed high school. She entered the University of Illinois at age 16 and graduated in June 1931 with a BS in Education.She met and married her beloved husband, Frank Augustus Matteson, on August 15, 1931, in Champaign. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1967.She had worked as an administrative assistant in the physical plant department at the University of Colorado for over 20 years. She also lived in the Golden West Retirement Community for 21 years before moving to Applewood Living Center in Longmont. Pauline was very active in both the local and regional Christian Women's Fellowship of her church. She was one of the first woman elders at Boulder First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her thirst for knowledge and drawing close to her God filled abundant pages of journals and notes. She was an ardent supporter of the Tennyson Center for Children (Colorado Christian Home) and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star-Queen Esther Chapter #5, Boulder, Colorado.Those grateful to have shared her life include a son, Eugene Craig Matteson and wife, Norma, of Grand Junction, Colorado, and a daughter, Judith Anne Dalton and husband, Robert, of Longmont, Colorado, six granddaughters, eleven great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Following cremation by Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services of Longmont, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 950 28th St., in Boulder.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tennyson Center for Children, 2950 Tennyson Street, Denver, CO 80212-3029, Phone (303) 433-2541.Please share thoughts, memories and condolences with Pauline's family at www.howemortuary.com.
