Pete was born August 5, 1921, the son of Andrea (Sanchez) and John Gallegos. He grew up in Mead and graduated from Mead High School. He served in the United States Army during WWII and spent time as a POW in Europe. Following his Honorable discharge, he returned to Mead and his roots as a farmer. Most of his working years were spent with Air Reserve Records Center in Denver, until the age of 55, when he retired to his farm.
Surviving are his sons Jack (Kathy) Gallegos of Berthoud, CO and Bob Gallegos of Mead, CO. He is further survived by his former daughter-in-law Cindy Gallegos of Washington and his brothers Mag Gallegos of Arvada, CO, Alfonso Gallegos of Commerce City/Thornton, CO and his sisters Mary Martinez of Fort Collins, CO and Virginia Montoya of Thornton, CO. Grandchildren Shadd Gallegos (Dawn), Manddi Chase (Brandon), Nolan Christopher Gallegos and Michael Robert Gallegos also survive along with his great grandchildren Perfecto, IV ""Leo"", Christian and Garrett.
Preceding Pete in death are his parents, his wife Stella (Lucero) Gallegos, his sister Sylvia Griese, his brother Alfred Gallegos and his grandson Perfecto Gallegos, III.
The entire family is appreciative of the loving care that Pete’s sister Virginia has provided through all of his challenges during the past eight years.
His grandson Shadd remembered him with these words:
I shed no tears for the passing of a man; rather I ask you share in celebrating the life of a hero.
Perfecto Pete Gallegos II
You have done so many things in your life from Aug 5, 1921 until now.
You fought through the hard times of the Great Depression.
You fought in WWII for all our freedom.
You fought to maintain hope in the times you were held captive by our enemies.
You fought through times you weren't considered an equal.
You fought to maintain a full-time job while fighting to maintain a farm and crops.
You fought to keep your sons out of trouble.
You fought to give my lovely grandmother everything she ever dreamed of.
You fought for Manddi and myself when we weren't strong enough.
You fought back the tears when Stella passed.
I watched you fight the loneliness after Stella's passing.
You fought dementia and the pain of old age.
And your whole life...
You were quiet and calm, you never asked for help, or owed anyone anything.
Always hiding from us the battles you waged.
The last fight was the only one ever lost, but nobody wins against time.
Thank you for all you have done...I hope that you can find peace.
Thank you for being our family's Rock.
Thank you for teaching me to never give up.
Thank you for teaching me to fight on.
Thank you for leading by example and fighting until the end
I promise I will do all I can to pass the things I have learned
on to my son Perfecto Gallegos IV.
Shadd
