Peter was known for his generous spirit, great sense of humor, and deep love for his family and friends. Throughout his life, he touched the hearts of many with his warmth, humor, and sincere love of people.
Born on March 16, 1962, in Belp, Switzerland to Fritz and Nellie Schmutz, Peter was the second youngest of four brothers. The family moved to Boulder, CO in 1967. Peter graduated from Boulder High School in 1981. He enjoyed playing many sports including football, track, gymnastics, skiing, fishing, and camping. Unfortunately, Peter suffered a severe head injury in 1984 which left him paralyzed on his left side. Peter did not let his disability stop him from living life moving forward. Peter soon found his new passion at the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center (CTRC) where he excelled in both riding horses and horsemanship. Peter’s dedication to CTRC not only brought him personal fulfillment but also inspired countless participants and volunteers, showing what was possible through perseverance and community. He participated with CTRC for forty-four years out of the forty-five years the organization has been in service. In 1999, Peter qualified to represent Colorado in the Special Olympics in North Carolina, where he won two bronze medals.
Peter enjoyed spending time with family and friends and especially took pleasure in traveling. Peter was also very musical and was an accomplished Swiss accordion player before his injury.
Peter is survived by his brothers, Michel (Heidi) Schmutz and Roger Schmutz of Longmont, sister-in-law Judy (Karl) Schmutz of Eagar, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, Nellie and Fritz Schmutz of Niwot and his eldest brother, Karl Eagar, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peter Schmutz Memorial Endowment to honor his legacy and support the programs that meant so much to him and to continue his legacy of resilience and inspiration at CTRC. Donations can be mailed to: Longmont Community Foundation, 600 Kimbark St, Longmont, CO 80503 or donate online at https://bit.ly/PSMemorialFund.
A celebration of life will take place on March 16th from 3pm-7pm at Cimmini’s Italian Restaurant 300 2nd Ave, Niwot, CO.
