

Phyllis Jean Prater, age 89, passed away September 18, 2016 at Life Care Center of Longmont.She was born September 8, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ogal and Mary (Davis) Byers.On December 21, 1954 in Indianapolis she married Robert C. Prater. They moved to Longmont in 1972 from San Jose, California.Jean was primarily a homemaker and she did some substitute teaching in San Jose. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Longmont, where she was very active as the Sunday School Superintendent for over 30 years. Jean also taught childrens Sunday School classes and helped with Vacation Bible School. Her love was kids, and many still called her Miss Jean, even as they became adults.Jean was a 42 year member of Columbine Chapter #11 Order of Eastern Star. She was a Past Worthy Matron and served as Grand Representative from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in Colorado. Jean was also a member and Past President of the Wednesday Music Club and the Longmont Federated Women's Club. She served on the Callahan House Board of Directors for many years.She enjoyed craft work, crocheting, sewing and cooking (many fondly remember her yeast rolls).She was preceded in death by her husband Robert on Oct. 28, 1995, her parents and sister Wilma (Billie) Safewright.Jean is survived by her son David Prater and his wife Cindy, three daughters Kim Prater, Karen Prater and Rita Williams and her husband Rick, step-daughter Linda Jones and her husband Rev. Quinten Jones, two grandchildren Joshua Dreher and his wife Melissa and Audrey Prater, one great-granddaughter Haley Dreher, one nephew Eric Safewright and three nieces Pam Dodson, Debbie Fulwiler and Sandy Kile.Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, September 22, 2016 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel with family present to greet friends. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Interment at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery. Please join the family for a reception and light lunch at First Baptist Church following the interment.
