Robert W. Hand

Robert Walter ˜Bob' Hand died October 19, 2013 at Atria Senior Living in Longmont. He was 80 years old.He was born June 21, 1933 in Wichita, Kansas to Walter and Helen (Satterthwaite) Hand. Bob grew up on the family dairy farm in Mulvane, Kansas.Bob began his college education at Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) transferring to Kansas State University where he received a BS degree in animal nutrition in 1955. He returned to the farm where he farmed until going back to Kansas State to earn a Master degree in 1960.On June 27, 1954 he married Nancy Jurgens in Longmont.He spent many years as an animal nutritionist for the Carnation-Albers company living in AK, KS, MO and finally Lubbock, TX. Bob was employed the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce as Agriculture Department Manager. He spent some years operating a swine feedlot in Dimmit, TX, and then went to work for TUCO (a division of the Upjohn Company) in Iowa and Minnesota.In 1984 Bob and Nancy moved to Longmont, CO to care for Nancy's father, Horace Jurgens. At that time Bob began a new career path in the pest control industry, initially working for Rocky Mountain Pest Control and later Abash Pest Control. Fascinated by this industry Bob took classes and became so knowledgeable that he formed his own company, Helping Hand Exterminating Consultants, which he operated until retiring in 2002.Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church in Longmont, where he sang in the choir. Over the years, in many places they lived he was an active member of his church. Often he taught Sunday school, he and Nancy were often youth sponsors in the congregation.He was a member of Lions Clubs International and the Columbine Lions club in Longmont. Bob sang with the Longmont Chorale. He was also a member of Colorado Pest Control Association, and in 2009 they recognized his contribution to pest control by naming the Bob Hand Scholarship in his honor. His hobby was bee keeping, and he had several hives at his home and produced homemade honey which he often gave to friends and neighbors.He was preceded in death by his parents.Bob is survived by his wife Nancy of Longmont, son Larry (Juli) hand of DeSoto, MO, daughter Becky (Chris) Book of Nazareth, TX, 6 grandchildren Susan (Brandon) Fick, Melanie Book, Eric Book, Allison Hand, Alex Hand and Tyler Hand, 3 great grandchildren Ethan, Josie and Carter Fick, and a brother Roy Bruce Hand.Memorial services will be held 2:00pm Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church.
