Born: 06 April 1950 in San Antonio, Texas
Died: 08 December 2019 Boulder, Colorado
Suzy Thevenet died peacefully early Sunday morning, the 8th of December, in the loving arms of her husband at her home in Boulder, Colorado.
Suzy grew up an army brat and liked to joke that she was from a “little bit of everywhere”, but her favorite was graduating in the class of ‘68, at Highland Falls High School while her father was stationed at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Suzy attended Penn State University where she completed a BA in English in 1971, graduating in three years. She was a proud and active member of the KAPPA ALPHA THETA sorority.
Suzy went on to earn a Masters in English Literature at Georgetown University, graduating in 1973.
After a brief stint on Capital Hill in Washington DC as a lobbyist for the American Dental Association, Suzy attended law school at University of Iowa, graduating in 1978 with a Juris Doctor degree. In her final academic year, 1978, Suzy served as the first female Editor-In-Chief of the Iowa Law Review.
After law school Suzy moved to Denver and was admitted to the US District Court in Colorado in 1979. In 1991 she was admitted into the US Court of Appeals 10th Circuit.
In 1995 Suzy was appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators for the American Arbitration Association and served with distinction up to the time of her death. She also served in a similar capacity for FINRA, the regulatory agency for financial broker/dealer industry during the same time frame.
Suzy was active in the fight against cancer, participating for many years with the Cancer League of Colorado, serving a one year term as President of the organization.
If it happened outdoors, Suzy was part of it! She loved her daily trail runs up Mt Sanitas in Boulder, completed 15 consecutive years of the 10K Boulder Bolder race, notched 38 of the Colorado 14’ers, peaks in the state rising above 14,000 feet, and was a regular on the many camping and hiking trails throughout the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. One of her favorite accomplishments was completing the 370 mile bike ride with her husband Tim from downtown Pittsburgh to Washington DC on the Great Allegheny Passage and C & O Canal Towpath trail system.
Suzys passport never spent more than a couple of months in her drawer. She loved to travel. Some people take a trip. Suzy knew HOW to travel! She never missed a cultural icon or a site of historical significance in any country she visited. Research was the key to her travel success.
She was a GOOGLE zen- master lining up an itinerary.
With friends and colleagues galore at home and abroad, she never lacked for a place to find a glass of wine, a great meal and a stimulating conversation. She was a great cook and a gourmet seeker in lodging and culinary excellence. She loved a bargain and always did the hard work to find the best for the least!
She is survived by a large family including her husband Timothy Chutz, five sisters, Michelle Thevenet Hughes, Renee Thevenet Rodbell, Margot Thevenet, Adrienne Jochum, Monique Balboa and her only brother, Howard Thevenet. She is preceded in death by her mother, Marie T. Walker, her father Stanley Edward Thevenet and two sisters, Robin I. Thevenet and Lise Thevenet Clark.
