She was born in 1936 to John and Ella Clark. Sylvia grew up in and around Boulder, Colorado. She told many stories about all her adventures growing up and about many colorful characters in her lifetime .She spoke about riding her bike out to the “white cliffs “ by Gunbarrel where her grandparents lived. She talked about her mom needing to tie her to a porch rail while she did the farm chores. Because Sylvia could always find trouble if let loose. Even in her later years Sylvia was known to be a spirited lady who would wheel herself around her nursing facility making lots of friends and brightening everyone’s day. And stealing candy out of the social workers office. Sylvia never said any bad words. If she was frustrated she would say “oh shistel pots and doodledots “. She was religious and enjoyed Sunday services at Good Samaritan village in Fort Collins. Sylvia graduated from Boulder High school in 1956. January 20th 1957 Sylvia married George Counas. They moved to Denver then finally settled in Longmont in 1962. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until George passed in 2020. Sylvia loved being a Mimi to her granddaughter Charissa. She would tell Charissa, I’m taking you on a walk ride. You ride and I walk. Last Christmas Charissa told her Mimi, I’m taking you for a walk ride. You ride and I walk. And as everyone who knows Sylvia would know that she told you as she left for heaven “watch out for yahoos and nincompoops”!
Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving husband George, her parents, and sister Joan.
She is survived by her son Steve Counas (Theresa Mejia ), her daughter Cindy Garland, granddaughter Charissa Kamigaki (Ted Smith), and great grandchildren Olivia Hood, Ella Hood , and Kai Smith. And loving brother John Clark (Betty). John took special interest in his big sister and made sure she always had what she needed. Family would like to thank Good Samaritan Village Fort Collins for taking extraordinary care of our loved one.
A graveside service for Sylvia will be held Wednesday, February 5th 2025 at 1:00PM at Foothills Gardens of Memory.
