Virgil Joseph (Red) Stang was born on April 16, 1936, in Victoria, Kansas, and died peacefully on August 27, 2025. He was born to Clement and Anna Marie Stang. His paternal and maternal grandparents, along with their children, immigrated to Victoria in the late 1800s from an area in Russia near the Volga River known for its villages of German settlers known as Volga Germans. Virgil was lovingly known as "Wirgie" to his parents and siblings, "Red" to his friends, and "Cookie Monster" to staff/caregivers at Life Care Center of Longmont.
Virgil was the middle child of 15 children - Eddie, Elmer, Bob, Tina, Linus, Lorine & Luella (twins), Kenny, Virgil, Donny, Joan, Jerry, Ronnie & Connie (twins), and Bill. From late childhood until 1975, Red lived in Hugo, CO, where he worked as the town's only barber. He married Barbara Sober. Together, they raised their children, Fred, Lou Ann, Andy, and David. From 1975 to 1983, Red lived in Limon, CO, and began a new career as a real estate agent and broker. From 1983 until his death, Red resided in Longmont, CO, where he continued his successful real estate career, working as a realtor for Caldwell Banker. He met and married Donna Murphy of Longmont.
Red, known for his deep faith in Christ and his positive outlook on life, was also a man of great generosity. His humor and kindness were infectious, and he had a way of drawing people to him. His clients and people he met in passing often became long-time friends, a testament to his generous spirit.
He will be greatly missed, but to paraphrase a D.L. Moody quote: "Someday you will read in the papers that Red Stang is dead. Don't you believe a word of it! At that moment, I shall be more alive than I am now. I shall have gone up higher out of this old tenement unto a house that is immortal - a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body."
