Charles proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he worked for the South Louisville Shops of L&N Railroad and later retired from Reynolds Metals.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. Fortner Sr. and Alma M. Fortner; his son, David Matthew Fortner; and his brother, Gerald Fortner.
Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy A. Fortner; his sons, Charles R. Fortner III (Holly) and Michael A. Fortner; his granddaughters, Lindsay, Sylvia, and Evie Fortner; his brother, Steve Fortner (Jennifer); his half-brother, James; his half-sisters, Georgia and Susie; along with many extended family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Advantage Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 10907 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40272. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Bethany Memorial Cemetery, 10917 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40272.
