Earl Mathews, age 76, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2018 at his home in Fairdale, Kentucky after battling cancer for over a year.
He was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Grover and Lucille (Ashbaugh) Mathews and was the oldest of two children.
Earl was a farrier and equine dental technician by trade for 50 years. Back in his “hay day” he rode in many saddle club racing events including barrels and poles. He was one of the founding members of the Bluegrass Saddle Club. He also enjoyed hanging out with family and friends reminiscing about the “good o’ days”.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joan. He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine (Nichols) Mathews; two sons, William Joseph (Ann) and Bryan Layne; one grandson, Garrett; and an uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered as the guy that would do whatever he could for you. “Give you the shirt right off his back.”
A Memorial Service will be held at Advantage Funeral Home - Hardy Chapel on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 11:30a.m. with Visitation Wednesday, September 19, 2018 from 4:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. at 10907 Dixie Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40272.
Expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Louisville, Kentucky.
