Bernice Powell Mason

Services for Bernice Powell Bass Mason, 94, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bryan Lipscomb officiating. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Old Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Mason was born August 26, 1921 in Groveton, Texas and passed away Friday, August 5, 2016 in a local nursing facility. She was the daughter of the late Sally (Lawrence) and Luther Powell.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her good cooking, gardening and caring for others. She loved telling stories about her huge family, which included six brothers and four sisters. She loved to cook and work in the garden and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon L. Bass and Linda and Gowland T. Bass and Katie; four grandchildren, Ken Mathews, Michael Bass, Michielle Morris and Brandy Holt; 13 great-grandchildren, a number of nephews and nieces and a number of grand-nephews and grand-nieces; and sister, Olivia (Tootsie) Toddy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Rowland Bass and John Mason; daughter, Gloria J. Burch; brothers, Guy Powell, Luther Powell, James (Sonny) Powell, David W. Powell, John Paul (Dude) Powell, and Victor E. Powell; sisters, Onita Thompson, Mary E. Scharfroth and Mozelle Moore.

Pallbearers will be Billy Holt, Michael Bass, E. J. Holt, Hunter Holt, Jerry Morris and Jonathan Bass.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
