A devoted servant of faith, Betty spent 33 years as a Southern Baptist Missionary in Brazil, where she touched countless lives with her compassion and commitment to helping others. She loved her family deeply, had a heart for service, and found joy in gardening and the simple beauty of country life.
Betty is survived by her sisters, Mary Sue Shelton and Earlene Chandler and her husband Jerry; her niece, Brenda Martin; her brother-in-law, Warren Torbert; her Brazilian family, Beatriz Avila and Betty Nice Cardoso; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Violet Waltmon, Margrete Hales and Julia Ann Torbert; her brothers, Eugene, Earl, Earnest, and Franklin Smith; and her sisters-in-law, Billie Christelle Smith, Florine Smith, Robbie Smith, and Helen Smith.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Gipson Funeral Home in Lufkin, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Betty will be laid to rest at Ryan Chapel Cemetery.
Her legacy of love, service, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
